The Jones Road bridge over Gum Swamp creek was originally set to be a repair, not replacement job. But County Commissioner Bob Brockman in a DOT release said it had deteriorated to a point where repairing wasn't feasible.

So Bleckley was able to secure an additional $200,000 from Georgia Department of Transportation’s Local Maintenance & Improvement Grant (LMIG) in addition to the $139,000 from the Transportation Investment Act (TIA) that was to be used for repair of one of the 11 bents on the bridge.

Another $115,000 in TIA discretionary funds plus in-kind labor (IE demolition, traffic control) by the county made the job feasible. The bridge is on an identified school bus route so the new bridge will meet full compliance with increased capacity standards required for such routes.

The Commissioner's Office and Construction Materials Services, Inc. will hold a ribbon cutting celebration for the bridge's reopening May 20 at 11 am. The public is invited to attend.
