At the Bleckley County School System’s End of the Year meeting held May 25, Mrs. Kimlyn Fernandez was named the Bleckley County School System Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Fernandez is currently a fourth grade Reading/ELA teacher at Bleckley County Elementary School.
In 1989, Mrs. Fernandez graduated from Stetson University in Deland, Florida with undergraduate degrees in piano performance and music education. She received her Master of Education Degree in Reading from Walden University in 2006.

She was hired at Bleckley Elementary School in the Fall of 2014 to teach Third Grade Language Arts and Social Studies. She had previously taught Kindergarten and First Grade in Houston County. Prior to receiving her early childhood certification, she taught preschool, piano, and children’s choir.

She currently serves on the BCES leadership team as a fourth grade representative and is also a member of the system-level Literacy Task Force. After her third grade students wrote letters to the mayor regarding the need for a city park, she was appointed to the mayor’s local task force to determine the feasibility of pursuing the city park project.

She is an active member of First Baptist Church Cochran. She sings in the church choir, plays keyboard for the contemporary worship service, and fills in for the church pianist during the traditional worship service when needed. Her newest area of church service involves mentoring middle school girls.

She is married to Duane Fernandez and they have three sons. Mrs. Fernandez’s main goal for each day is to make her students feel loved. She believes there are three key areas that are vital to student success: a safe environment, differentiated learning, and setting high expectations. These, together, pave the way for student success.
