With the millage rate set, Tuesday night’s monthly Board of Education meeting was light in terms of actions. However, there some things of note to take place.

One of them was the approval of a fireworks show that will take place Friday night following the Homecoming football game. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development Authority, it will be ran by Cochran Fire Department employees. Approval was granted pending legal review of the hold harmless sent by city council as well as permission by JCI Contractors to use the site of the future new primary school to conduct the show.

One point of pride was ESPLOST collections. Thanks to an auditing adjustment, they went up to $244,000. Even without the adjustment, collections were $112,164. Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith indicated they would be able to use the money for bond payments rather than the general fund.

Smith announced the annual REACH Scholarship signing ceremony date had been changed from October 28 to November 12 at 10 am in the middle school gym. He presented a report of remote learning, 360 students had opted for remote learning, 14.1 percent of total enrollment.

Updating the modular units, Smith said they had received a waiver regarding a sprinkler system be installed in units installed after January 1 of this year. In response to a question by board member Mike Sasser, Smith said the fire alarm that serves Bleckley Primary also serves the units and there were fire extinguishers to meet code requirements.

There was also an adjustment made to the car rider line at Bleckley Primary. A new entrance had been made for buses to enter and exit while construction on the new primary school continues. It will be two-way, while the car rider line will be one-way.

Smith said construction of the new primary school was ahead of schedule. He said by next board meeting, they should see concrete slabs being poured, and possibly walls erected.

The only grant to approve was the Title IV, Part B grant for the 21st Century after school program in the amount of $305,943. It was approved unanimously.

From the Executive Session: Angie Durham’s designation was changed from BCHS girls basketball community assistant coach to BCHS girls basketball assistant coach.
