Abney overcomes obstacles to continue baseball career.

Seated L-R: Gordon State hitting coach Aaron Mizell, Chandler Abney, Cori Abney. Standing L-R: Taylor Cobb, Ansley Abney, Shane Abney.

Before Chandler Abney signed his letter of intent to play for Gordon State College baseball Thursday afternoon, BCHS head baseball coach Brad Davis shared a story of how Abney dove out of bounds for a loose ball during a pickup basketball game in sixth grade. Davis said it was an example of Abney’s heart. That same heart helped Abney earn the opportunity as he had Tommy John Surgery last year and missed games this season due to scar tissue. Despite those setbacks, Abney had a 1.000 fielding percentage this season. He’s a career .300 hitter who also had 18 RBI and scored 28 runs this season.

(Courtesy BleckleyProgress.com contributor.) Brooke Krieg participated in the Georgia High School Golf Coaches Association North-South All Star Tournament held June 5-7 at Sunset Country Club in Moultrie. She was nominated by BCHS head golf coach Dave Wiegert. The tournament features golfers from across the state in a North versus South competition. Day one was a four-ball format with two golfers taking on two from the south in best ball match play. The second day was singles match play. Each individual or team win earned a point for their respective team.

Krieg and her partner one their best ball match on day one as the South led 6 ½ to 5 ½. Day two saw Krieg paired against AA State Lowe Medalist Rin Richards from St. Vincent’s. All square up to the final hole, Richards pulled out the match, earning a point. The North prevailed 19 ½ to 17 ½. On the experience Krieg said, “It was an honor to participate in the tournament and a very fun format to be a part of.” She added, “Hopefully next year the South team will pull out the win!”
