The Cochran Bleckley Rec. Department board held their monthly meeting Monday night. Though members Jon Thrower and Tonya Harris were unable to attend, a quorum was present because board chair Carmen Pearce could serve as the fourth vote. There is also a vacancy on the board.

During his report, director Andy Brand provided an update on winter soccer registration. He said 117 children had registered, up from the past two years. Brand said if numbers continue to grow, they would look into doing soccer all stars in the fall.

Regarding the soccer equipment donation from Atlanta United FC, Brand said some of the items had been delayed due to Thanksgiving. He hoped things would start arriving this Friday.

Brand mentioned plans to close the department December 23-30, work part of the day on New Year’s Eve, then return full time on January 4. He said they’d done this in past years. Board members had no objections.

He also mentioned that the department would be closed for a few days upcoming so that he and maintenance worker Allan Yawn could do some remodeling work. Plans include painting the walls and new flooring.

Board member Chan Jones went over SPLOST reimbursements. He noted they were higher than planned. Jones suggested rather than trying to figure out how to spend the money, Brand should come up with a list of things he felt was needed. Brand said he would try to have one at the next meeting.

Member Rich Hulsey noticed what appeared to be some holes near some of the playground equipment. Brand said the holes were a result of drainage coming down from the Gilman plant next door. He said pipes that were designed to catch and reroute the water had rusted out and collapsed.

He also said two representatives from Gilman had visited, they said the plant owner took full responsibility for it. Gilman will be handling the repair. Brand suggested Gilman fill the holes, the reps agreed. Brand suggested they speak to city manager Richard Newbern on how to proceed.

The final item on the agenda was a request by Brand to give a raise to Yawn. Brand said Yawn did many things to help out, his ability to handle some projects helped save money. In a brief executive session, the raise was approved.
