The Bleckley County Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith were a finalist for the Georgia School Board Association’s “Governance Team of the Year.” It marks the third straight year Bleckley was a finalist for the award.
The GSBA website states “finalists were vetted through a stringent application process and a visit by an impartial review team to vet the information in the application.” This year, the Bleckley Governance Team was one off 11 finalists statewide after being one of 10 and nine finalists the previous two years.
This year, the GSBA expanded their Governance Team awards to three categories. Small districts (1-3,000 students), medium districts (3-10,000 students) and large districts (10,000 and above.)
Though Bleckley didn’t win, a release quotes a statement from GSBA Executive Director Valerie Wilson who said they look forward to highlighting good governance teams. “The Georgia School Boards Association always looks forward to annually highlighting quality governance for the benefit of all boards and superintendents around Georgia.”
Bleckley’s Governance Team this year: Chair Kim Wright, Vice Chair Mike Sasser, board members Amy Williams, Shanna Evans, and Diane Lester, along with Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith. The recognition follows the Board of Education being named a GSBA Exemplary Board, its highest recognition.
