With changes to the schedule due to COVID-19 concerns in different programs, Wednesday’s noon games at West Laurens was the first time in two weeks both the boys and girls played on the same day. The boys were coming off a late night, losing at Tattnall Square Academy.

The Lady Royals were facing a familiar face, former Bleckley coach John Stanley leads the Lady Raiders. Tied at 14 in the second, Jalexia Taylor scored seven straight points. WL though responded with a 13-2 run to lead 27-23 at halftime.

Former Middle Georgia College men's basketball coach Ben Rogers was at the game to support his grandson, former Royals player Tyler Rogers, an assistant with the Raiders boys team. Coach Rogers is pictured with his great grandsons Brooks and Bowden.

Despite scoring only one basket in the third, a Taylor four-point play, it was an 11-point game going to the fourth. Though getting within five on a Taylor basket in the fourth, the Lady Raiders closed 10-4 to win 51-40. Taylor had 18 points.

DJ Sanders made this layup.

Down 18-10 at halftime, the Royals were down by 12 in the third before a quick 9-0 burst capped by TJ Mays basket cut the deficit to three. The Raiders though scored the quarter’s final five points.
