A new initiative at Middle Georgia State University will expand mental health services for students. “BeWell@MGA” is being done in partnership with the University System of Georgia.
Slated to begin during the spring 2021 semester, the new initiative will offer things such as access to a new app with online self-help resources, virtual psychiatric services for mental health assessments and medication management, as well as a 24/7 support line for students needing help with mental stress.
Project funding will come from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund. Established last year through the federal CARES act, the U.S. Department of Education awards grants to state governors for the purpose of providing local educational agencies, institutions of higher education, and other education-related entities with emergency assistance to help deal with the COVID pandemic.
MGA Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Jennifer Brannon noted in statement that students are determined to push forward with their studies despite the extra stress of the pandemic and the extra funding was appreciated.
“The pandemic has been hard on most Americans, and college students are among those experiencing more stress, anxiety, and depression. We have been and continue to be in awe of the resiliency of our students who are determined to keep working on their degrees despite the added mental and emotional burdens. MGA is grateful for this generous funding that will help us help our students.”
