Monday night’s monthly rec. board meeting was mainly used for discussions and updates. Neither chair Carmen Pearce nor Rich Hulsey were able to attend. It was decided that the financial report will be voted on when all members could do so.

Director Andy Brand said soccer opening day was held Saturday. He said save for one team who felt it was too cold to play, there were no issues. Brand said he expects soccer numbers to rise in the spring even though he thinks travel ball and COVID concerns will hurt spring baseball and softball numbers.

Brand mentioned basketball registration was ongoing now through January 22. He was hoping signups would improve. This Saturday, the rec. department will host a “basketball boot camp” with BCHS coaches and players. Registration tables will be set up for the basketball leagues.

Looking ahead to spring and summer, Brand mentioned Dixie Youth Baseball would be holding a planning meeting this weekend. He said the rec. department wouldn’t be allowed to bid for any baseball state tournaments Host cities from last year’s cancelled tournaments would be awarded the berths this year.

As a result, Brand said he’d put in bids to host, 6, 8, and 10u state softball tournaments. He felt like they had to chance to get at least two of the tournaments.

There was discussion over getting health insurance for Brand. Because he’s neither a city nor county employee, he doesn’t have work insurance. Board member Chan Jones said that they (the department) could pay a third if they could get the city and county to agree to also pay a third.

Jones had been talking to Commissioner Mike Davis. Board member Jon Thrower volunteered to talk to the city. In planning for spring ball, Jones asked about the status of toilets added to the concession stand. Brand said they were working. Jones said wanted to make sure everything was in place before people came out there.

Another part of spring and summer was hosting tournaments. Brand said he would contact South Central Health District director Dr. Thomas Craft for guidance on things such as how many teams they could hold.

Board member Tonya Harris expressed interest in assuming responsibilities for the concession stand. While nothing was officially decided, there was no objection made to her doing so.

Remolding work had been going on in the offices and conference room within the past month. Brand expected the work to be wrapped up soon.
