While the Cochran Bleckley Rec. Department has been operating fully in terms of offering sports, the gym has been closed to recreational play. Discussion on reopening it was part of Monday night’s monthly board meeting.

It was noted that the outdoor court at Willie Basby Park was still closed. Board members and director Andy Brand were not opposed to reopening the gym. Their concern was having someone on hand to ensure rules were followed including set hours.

While no formal vote was taken, it was decided that Brand would talk to someone in the community about serving as a monitor. Brand also planned to find out about the cost of adding sound to the video recording system in place. It would be used to help adjudicate any future incidents.

In terms of improvements, SPLOST money will be used to purchase fencing as well as a new football scoreboard. Brand provided an update on spring soccer. Opening day is this Saturday. Registration increased from 68 last year to 185 this year.

Brand said there were plans to have a fall soccer league as well as all stars. Also at the meeting, Steve Rhe addressed the board. He expressed a desire to hold a community back to school style event featuring free food, music, as well as the distribution of school supplies.

Rhe said he’d already spoken to Chamber of Commerce president Rusty Lloyd about the idea, and he’d also had conversations with Brand. Board members expressed interest in the idea and thanked him for coming. In conversation after Rhe departed, Jon Thrower suggested having a firm agenda of what activities would take place.

Chan Jones expressed a desire to ensure either Brand or board chair Carmen Pearce would be on hand. Brand (and Thrower) will be attending a budget meeting with the city next Monday and plan to discuss the idea with Lloyd then.
