Jaden Mobley also returns kicks.

It was one last chance for the Royals to get some practice in before the season started as BCHS made the short trip across the river to scrimmage Hawkinsville Friday night. Bleckley lost nine starters to graduation including 3-AA Offensive Player of the Year Amarius Mims, 3-AA Defensive Player of the Year Willie Harris, quarterback Dominic Sasser, and running back Chuckie Stephens.

Jahvon Butler had a big night in just three quarters of work.

Unlike some scrimmages, a score was kept. BC got on the board first via a Jahvon Butler touchdown run with 8:30 left. The defense got a stop on their first opportunity, holding the Devils on fourth and one from midfield.

Quintavis "Scooter" Slappy with a tackle.

Austin Johnson returned a fumble with 10:37 left in the second to increase the lead to 14-0. BC though would have consecutive turnovers on their next two possessions. The first was an interception on the Red Devil 28. The second, a muffed punt recovered on BC’s 38 with 4:07 left.

Kamari Mack had 16 yards on five carries.

The Royal defense though would hold again. After reaching the 10, the Red Devils were forced back to their 30. Hawkinsville finally got on the board, converting a fourth and one in BC territory, with a touchdown run. It was 20-13 with 5:32 left.

James Teston drops back to pass.

Bleckley answered when James Teston connected with Jaden Mobley on a touchdown pass on fourth and nine from the eight with 2:38 left. The point after was blocked. A Red Devil touchdown run with 1:42 left capped all varsity scoring. In three quarters, it was 20-13 BC.

Marcus Newsom helps on a tackle.

JV and reserves played the fourth quarter. Highlights included a touchdown run from Zane Lassiter and a ten-yard touchdown pass from Shane Knighton to Ke’Shun Butler. Stat wise, Jahvon Butler rushed for 108 yards on 12 carries in three quarters of work.

Amarian Burns fights to stay on his feet.

Amarian Burns ran for 49 yards on four carries. Defensively, Quintavis “Scooter” Slappy had six tackles, six solo tackles. Tyler Wilcox and Nehemiah Mack both had 5.5 total tackles, five solo.

BCHS opens the regular season August 20 at West Laurens. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.
