As has been the case in recent years, BCHS opened the regular season Friday night against West Laurens. The Royals were looking for their second straight win against the Raiders.

BCHS got a break on West Laurens first possession, recovering a fumble at the Raider 42. But they fumbled the ball into the endzone on the next play. The Royals next drive started at the Raider 35, but nothing came of it.

BC though got another break when the Raiders fumbled on their own one. Jahvon Butler punched it in on the next play. The lead was short lived as West Laurens returned a BC fumble 24 yards for a game-tying touchdown with 2:14 left.

The Royals used some fourth down magic on their next drive. A fourth down completion to TJ Mays kept the drive alive. Then, James Teston found Jaden Mobley in the endzone on fourth and 13. With 8:55 left in the second, Bleckley led 14-7.

West Laurens though would answer, tying the game on a two-yard run with 4:46 left in the half. They recovered a fumble at the BC 44 in the final minute of the half, but the Royal defense held.

In the third, BC recovered another Raider fumble at their 49. However, a potential go-ahead touchdown pass was wiped out with a holding call. Mays gave the Royals the lead with 1:28 left in the third on a 40-yard run.

The Loyal Royals were on hand to cheer on BC.

Neither team could move the ball in the fourth. With 1:02 remaining, the Raiders got the ball on their 47. They got a conversion on fourth and 10 from the 42 Quintavis “Scooter” Slappy would ensure there’d be no comeback as he sacked Raider quarterback Gunner Jeffers to end the game.

The Royals hung on for a 21-14 win. Butler rushed for 68 yards on 19 carries. Teston completed 10 of 16 passes for 114 yards. Mobley caught six passes for 57 yards.

BCHS opens the home season versus Wilcox County August 27 at 7:30 pm.
