Dr. Terry L. (Trey) Belflower, Jr. has been tapped by the Bleckley Board of Education as the sole finalist for school superintendent.. The decision was made during a called meeting held Monday afternoon.

The search began in May when current superintendent Dr. Steve Smith announced he would be resigning to become executive director of the Heart of Georgia RESA. While Smith had originally set a resignation date of September, it was moved up to August 31 due to retirement.

With the assistance of search firm King-Cooper and Associates, the position was advertised. Over the past five months, the applications of 22 applicants were reviewed, candidates screened, and interviews were conducted. According to a release, the board must wait at least 14 days before taking an official vote.

Belflower has a 26 year career in public education, all in the Bleckley County School System. He began his educational career as a teacher and coach at Bleckley County Middle School in 1996. He then served six years as assistant principal at Bleckley County High School.

Belflower returned to BCMS in 2011 as principal, he went back to BCHS as principal in 2014. he became Director of Federal Programs and Facilities and, in 2020, was named Assistant Superintendent.

Belflower is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a B.S. Degree in exercise science. He also has a Master’s Degree from Georgia College and State University, a specialist degree from Albany State University, and an Ed.D. in Education Administration from California Coast University.

BOE chair Amy Williams was excited to have Belflower as the next superintendent, saying ““We are delighted to have someone of Dr. Belflower’s experience and ability to be our next superintendent. He is committed to Bleckley County, has a record of successful leadership, and will also bring new ideas to our school system.”

She went on to say the board had a “very deliberate and thorough search process” and appreciated how members worked together during process.
