At Tuesday’s monthly meeting, the Bleckley County Board of Education set a tentative millage rate of 14.1, down from last year’s rate of 14.286. However, because of increases to the tax digest (namely many property owners given higher valuations of their properties), it will constitute an 11.2 percent tax increase.

According to a pending news release, the 14.1 millage rate is a 1.411 increase above the rollback rate. The release also states the district must maintain a minimum millage rate of 14 mills in order to qualify for equalization grant funding, which amounts to $4.2 million.

A series of public hearings will be held at the Board of Education office. The dates are as follows: October 6, 6 pm, and October 17 at both 11 am and 6 pm. The final milage rate will be set at a called meeting held at 6:30 pm that night.

In other news, JCI Contractors are still working on open items at the cheer/wrestling facility and the middle school tennis courts. Air conditioning units are being installed at the cheer/wrestling facility.

Several grants and contracts were approved. One was a list of vendors used by the school nutrition department. Approved was the CTAE Perkins V Program Improvement Grant. A budget by CTAE Director Dr. Matt Godwin was included, it can be found here, then clicking on “G.”

Also approved was the FY23 grant for the 21st Century Community Learning Center in the amount of $335,970.

From the executive session, Dr. Cindy Felkins was named Federal Program Director. Her assessment duties were transferred to Lara Rowland, District Curriculum Director. The duties of Facilities Director were added to the responsibilities of Transportation Director Stan Thompson.
