The Bleckley Competition Cheerleaders were in Macon Friday afternoon for the GHSA State Finals. It was a bit different, a late afternoon start for a squad used to performing in the mornings or early afternoons.

The Royals were ninth squad to take the floor. A large contingent of families and friends made the short trip up I-16 to support them. Finally, it was time and PA announcer Jeff Halsey said , “Bleckley County, you may take the floor!”

Moments later, the routine began. And it was their best of the season. Everything stuck. All the stunts hit. Tumbling had no problems. Good jumps, great energy, everything on the pyramid hit.

A look at the faces of the squad and coaches as they left the mat said it all. They felt good because they hit everything. After so many cases of one thing or another not hitting, everything did today on the biggest stage.

There was a sense of nervous excitement for the top six announcement. However, when the top six for Class A, Division 1 were called to the floor, Bleckley’s name wasn’t mentioned. Fans were stunned.

A further look at the scoresheets would reveal BC missed a top six finish by half a point. Despite the disappointment, head coach Heather Davis had nothing but praise for the squad.

Because in her words, they left it “all on the mat.” And that’s all you can ask of a squad in cheerleading.
