The Bleckley County Board of Education interviewed the two candidates for the District 2 post vacated when Diane Lester resigned to run for city council, Jason Dean and Phillip Lester, during Tuesday night’s monthly meeting.
It was the second interview for both candidates, as chair Shanna Evans said they had questions to ask of both men. Dean and Lester did well in their interviews, both men answering questions on things such as their ability to serve with their current job and life schedules as well as what they felt the school system did well and what could be improved.
Following the executive session, a final vote for the new board member was taken. On a nomination by Brandon Keel, seconded by David Rojas, Phillip Lester was chosen as the new District 2 board representative. His term will last until next May.
There were no contracts nor grants to approve. During approval of the consent items, Rojas asked about the account balance referenced in the cheerleading fundraisers listed, noting his daughter was a cheerleader. It was explained to him that the balance refers to the total cost for things such as uniforms and other supplies.
From the executive session: The board approved the resignation due to retirement of FAST coordinator Vonda Bryant, effective at the end of the year. Nolan Gottlieb was added to the Athletic Staffing Plan as a BCHS boys assistant soccer coach.
