The 2024 season was quite the emotional ride for Royals football.. BC lost five games by four points or less. But thanks to the power rankings, they made the playoffs.

They would make it to the second round of state losing to Fitzgerald 28-24. Head coach Von Lassiter took time to answer some questions via email about last season and how this season is looking.

This summer, they’ve had workouts in Cochran, hosted Perry and Crawford County for 7 on 7 drills, as well as going to a padded camp at Rockmart. Lassiter said the “kids have worked hard” and the practices have been well attended. He added they would be hosting a padded camp July 15 and 16.

With the playoff game, BC lost six games last season by four points or less. Lassiter said he’d never experienced something like that as a coach before. But he had praise for how the players handled it and believed they were justly rewarded for not giving up by making it to the sweet 16.

“The kids deserved to get to the second round. They worked really hard. They got better and stayed together for the most part. They were a really good group of kids.”

Quarterback Kam Everett was one of nine starters lost to graduation. Brody Fleming will be under center to begin the season. Though Evrett was almost as well known for his running as his throwing, Lassiter didn’t think the offense would change drastically under Fleming saying, “We will adjust a few things but we feel we can run all aspects of our offense with Brody.”

On which side of the ball will be better starting off, Lassiter believes that they would be good on both sides saying they would be “very sound on defense and fast on offense.”

About the region, Lassiter believed the region was tough “from top to bottom” and they’d have their hands full each week. As to what it would take to make the playoffs, Lassiter said they just had “to perform every week. With power rankings you have a chance to get in. We have to focus on one day at a time.”

BCHS opens the 2025 season at home August 1 when they scrimmage Hawkinsville at 7:30 pm. Note, the season opener vs Rutland August 14 will be part of the Bibb Couty Classic. Bleckley will be the home team. The game will be played at Thompson Stadium, kickoff at 8 pm.
