The Bleckley County Board of Education met in regular session Tuesday night with all members present except chair Shanna Evans. Vice chair Brandon Keel presided over the meeting which saw a few items acted on.
Much of the activity came from the consent items. Besides the usual fundraiser requests and one overnight filed trip, there was a motion to move $3,000 from their operating account to a CD (certificate of deposit) with State Bank of Cochran. There was discussion over Board Norms Protocols which had to be approved.
The protocols deal with numerous topics including fairness, how to proceed if visiting a school as a board member and not a parent, and ethics/conflicts of interest. Also discussed were items that had to be turned in to GSBA so they could try to obtain the title of exemplary board status again.
All consent items were approved. To see the list, go to https://simbli.eboardsolutions.com/SB_Meetings/ViewMeeting.aspx?S=4014&MID=126951&Tab=Agenda&enIID=dQntwUMR2ODVlYF6Tplush9lQ%3D%3D and look under “B.”
During the review of financials, superintendent Dr. Trey Belflower noted that there was a delay in getting federal funding for the 21st Century after school programs. As a result, the start of the programs could be temporarily delayed. The delay is not expected to be long term.
Approved was a motion to pay $237,000 to replace the bleachers in the high school gym and $9,500 to dispose of the old bleachers. The funds will come from ESPLOST. Also, while the walkway for the home side bleachers will remain, it will not be included for the visitors side.
Also approved was the FY26 School Resource Officer Agreement with the Sheriff’s Office for $ 164,947.65. That amount covers 10/12 of two officers salaries and half of a third officer’s. The county will pay the salary of the fourth officer.
From the executive session: Former Royal baseball players Austin Simmons and Steven Knighton were both added to the athletic staffing plan as community baseball coaches.
