Here come the Royals.

Friday night was the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year for many, football season. Though just a scrimmage, it was against longtime rival Hawkinsville which meant a good turnout at Shelly Hayes Field.

The 2024 season for BCHS was emotional, losing five regular season games by four points or less. Thanks to the power rankings, the Royals made the playoffs, only to lose in round two at Fitzgerald by four points.

BC lost nine starters to graduation. But Friday’s performance, while it was a scrimmage, looked promising for the upcoming season. As was usually the case with scrimmages, there were no kickoff nor punt returns, nor attempts to block any kicks.

Receiving the opening kickoff, Bleckley took just 57 seconds to go 70 yards, capped by a Deondrez Robertson touchdown run. With 8:19 left in the first, Connor Cairney caught a 20-yard touchdown pass as Bleckley jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

The offense did have one fumble in the first quarter, recovered by Hawkinsville on the BC 33. But the defense prevented any damage. The scoreboard ceased functioning and was cut off in the second quarter.

It was there where the Red Devils scored on a three-yard touchdown run. BC though quickly answered via Brody Fleming’s second touchdown pass of the night, 56 yards to Octavius Tate.

BC took a 28-7 lead into halftime thanks to a touchdown run by Isiah Simeton. Another Simeton run on the first series of the third quarter capped varsity activity for the night. The starting offense scored 35 points in less than three full quarters.

Reserves played the remainder of the game. For Bleckley, Kix Foskey had a touchdown run. Looking at the stats from the starters, Fleming was 10 of 11 for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

Tate caught three passes for 114 yards and one score. Defensively, Tug Pasby had 3.5 total tackles, three solo. Willy Walters had three tackles, all three were solo. Two were tackles for loss.

BCHS travels to Rochelle to scrimmage Wilcox County August 8. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.
