The Bleckley chapter of the NAACP has had a busy week with events to mark Juneteenth, the date historically marked as the end of slavery in America. A parade was held Thursday morning. Saturday, a festival was held in the parking lot behind the Chamber of Commerce and police station. The theme was “Family Reunion.” It featured a variety of places to eat, shop, and learn about Juneteenth. The day, and the celebration, concluded with a gospel concert in the city auditorium. That concert included the debut CD for Randy Mays, pastor of Tabernacle of Testimony Church in Cochran.

Local first responders recognized for saving child in distress.

Michael Francis
Douglas Denmark
Chandler Laird, recognized later due to being on duty at another post during the ceremony.

(Photos courtesy Office of the Sheriff- Bleckley County GA Facebook page.) in February of 2024, three first responders arrived on scene first to answer a 911 call about a child not breathing, turning blue, and seizing. The decision was quickly made to not wait for EMS and transport the child via sheriff’s department patrol car to the Emergency Room. Bleckley County Firefighter Michael Francis provided rescue breaths. BCSO Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Douglas “Calen” Denmark drove and Sheriff’s Deputy Chandler Laird escorted them, using his car to block traffic and clear intersections.. Their quick action was later hailed by ER staff as being key to saving the child’s life. This past Monday, the three were recognized at the Four County Exchange Club meeting. Francis was named Firefighter of the Year. Denmark and Laird (now a patrolman) were named Law Enforcement Officers of the Year
