The return of a longtime summer tradition.




One of the many things missing from summer last year was Vacation Bible School. While many churches had resumed in-person services in June, COVID concerns kept activities limited. That longstanding tradition resumed Monday night at Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church. After a sandwich dinner, children went to different stations including crafts, Bible study, and recreation. The theme at Union Hill is “Discover Adventure Island.” It runs from 6-8:30 pm through Friday.

Remembering those who gave all.



After being cancelled last year due to COVID-19, the annual Memorial Day program returned Monday morning on the courthouse square. It featured remarks by both Mayor Billy Yeomans and Commissioner Mike Davis, and the memorial roll call reading of local veterans who died while the serving the country. Guest speaker was Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Johnny Barton.

Time change for June BOE meeting.

The start time for the June 8 Board of Education meeting has been moved to 5:30 pm. The change is to allow board members to accompany the contractor and architect on a walkthroguh of the primary school construction site before the meeting. The contractor and architect will provide an update during the meeting. Also, a public hearing on the final FY22 budget will be held before a vote on the budget is taken.

A Memorial Day tradition returns.




(Photos courtesy BleckleyProgress.com contributor.) While Memorial Day has always been about remembering fallen soldiers, a longstanding tradition to help celebrate the occasion is fireworks. Last year, there were few celebrations due to COVID-19. Sunday night, the tradition of fireworks resumed as Christ Chapel Cochran held a fireworks show.

Busy week for BCHS boys basketball team.

Saturday morning, the team held a car wash at Citizens Bank of Cochran. Proceeds from both fundraisers will go toward expenses for the upcoming season.
