It was a busy pre-Thanksgiving holiday Board of Education meeting held Tuesday night. One of the big items to come out of the meeting was the adoption of safety and security policy GAMB.

According to minutes, the policy had been on the table for approximately two years. In short, policy GAMB allows for certain school personnel to access weapons while performing their normal responsibilities. It was brought before the board last night following a unanimous vote by the District Safety and Security Committee at their November 5 meeting.

GAMB has several procedures in place before someone can access a weapon. A staff member must volunteer to be part of a school safety response team and would be selected by Superintendent Steve Smith based upon the policy. They must meet the requirements to access a weapon safely secured in a classroom and would receive training before being authorized.

Updating the Primary School construction project, the timeline for selecting a Construction Manager At Risk was modified due to posting requirements on the Georgia Procurement Registry. The updated timeline was approved.

Also, on hand to be recognized were Shelly Cranford and the Runnin’ Royals girls cross country team. They won a third straight AA state title November 3 in Carrollton. The third straight title marks the first three-time state champion in school history. It also broke a longstanding tie with competition cheerleading, winners of two state titles.

From the executive session- Brantley Collins was added as assistant high school girls basketball coach.
