Grants will help MGA's Cochran campus library preserve artifacts.

Librarians working at Roberts Library on the Cochran campus of Middle Georgia State University will be able to preserve local history thanks to two recent grants.

A $1,700 grant from the Georgia Historical Records Council will fund the transfer of nearly three decades worth of local newspapers to microfilm. An additional $1,005 grant from the council will allow the preservation of items from the campus including photos and slides.

“We’re grateful to receive these grants,” said April Warren, cataloging librarian at Roberts Library in a release issued by the university. “They reiterate the value of our archives collection, not only to our MGA community, but in the context of its value to the history of this region and the state of Georgia as a whole.”

Overseeing the transfer besides Warren are Ann Williams, assistant director for library services, and Ben Mullis, reference and instruction librarian. They’ll be preserving a backlog of newspapers going back to the 1990’s, hard copy photos, slides and negatives.

Many of the other items come from the days when Middle Georgia State University was Middle Georgia College. Those include student newspapers, yearbooks, clothing, trophies, as well as memorabilia relating to the school’s previous mascots, Warrior and Wolverine. Amongst the most unique is a taxidermy mount of a real wolverine.

Most of the archived material is located on the third floor of Roberts Library. The preservation work is expected to take about a year. For more information, contact Warren, april.renfroewarren@mga.edu, or (478)934-3071.
