Jack Fernandez sets to throw from third base. |
If one was to write a script on how to succeed in a must-win game without your top pitcher available, it’d look similar to how Friday’s game three for the Royals against Westside-Augusta. Dylan Cowart stepped up in just his second start of the season, and BC got lots of timely hitting.

Steven Knighton receives the ball at first base. |
Andrew Thompson’s two-out, two-run single in the third gave Bleckley a 3-0 lead. The Patriots got back in the game with a two-run hit in the fourth. A dropped ball by the first baseman in the home half with two outs gave one run back. Another run came in with two outs in the fifth when a fly ball fell in and out of the shortstop’s glove.

Cowart worked out first and third, one out jam in the top of the sixth. Steven Knighton’s second hit of the game came with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, scoring two runs. A one out double in the seventh proved harmless as BCHS advanced to their second elite eight in three seasons, winning 7-2. Cowart gave up five hits, two runs, two walks, in seven innings.

Knighton was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Jack Fernandez went 2 for 4 with a double. Because Bremen is also a top seed and won the GHSA Universal Coin Toss, Bleckley will travel to Bremen for their quarterfinal matchup May 8. Start times are TBD.
