Friday night was another opportunity for coaches as well as fans to get an early look at the 2019 BCHS football team as the Royals traveled to Perry for a scrimmage against the Panthers. Seven starters were lost to graduation (four on offense, three on defense.) Notable loses include quarterback and long snapper Zach Lassiter and running back Nykeem Farrow.

Bryce Bailey scores.

As it was a scrimmage, there were modified rules. While there were kickoffs and punts, there were no returns. All possessions started at the 25. No rush was allowed during point after attempts. Quarterbacks wore colored jerseys. Touching them would end the play. And per agreement by both Royals head coach Von Lassiter and Panthers head coach Kevin Smith, no score was kept.

Varsity played the first three quarters. Dominic Sasser took snaps at quarterback. BC also did a version of the wildcat with Bryce Bailey lining up behind center on some plays which ended up being running plays. Both he and Arkenzio Hayes saw time at running back.

There was both good and bad in the first half. BC marched down the field on their first possession and got a Treg Corner field goal. An interception at the Royal 31 by Perry was stopped when the Royals forced a fumble on the five. But the Panthers were able to capitalize on a fumble recovered at the BC 31 to score their second touchdown of the half.

The Panthers first and second touchdowns, a run and pass, were both plays of at least 20 yards. Their third run, a one-yard run, was set up by another long pass play. Bleckley ended the half on a good note when Sasser connected with Marcus Brown on a fourth down touchdown pass with 22 seconds left. Sasser’s second touchdown pass came in the third quarter, on fourth down from the Panther 33. He connected with Bailey on a catch and run.

Sincere Fowler was one of several players in on the stop.

JV and younger players took the field in the fourth. The defense gave up one touchdown. While the offense did get inside Perry territory twice, both drives stalled. Bleckley will once again scrimmage West Laurens August 16 and open the regular season the next week at Hawkinsville.
