With the state tournament completed earlier in the week, the Royals golf teams took time Thursday evening to celebrate and reflect on another successful season. A banquet/cook out was held on the property of team member Anna Johnson’s family with an awards presentation following.
The 2019 season was one of growth for one Royals’ team, while being one of great success for the other. The Royals golf team continued to be a young group of golfers who are gaining experience and looking to improve their skills. They worked hard and saw growth throughout the season.
Although the boys team did not finish as well as they would have liked at the Area tournament, Coach Wiegert believes with hard work in the off-season, their goal of qualifying for the state tournament as a team is within their grasp next year. He commented, “Having Ty (Cranford) make the tournament as an individual is a great first step in getting our whole team back into the event. I think that the other guys will see it as motivation to set up their off-season workouts.”
During the awards ceremony, all Royals team members received their athletic letter certificates, as well as, a 2019 Royals golf flag. Ty Cranford received the boys’ team low medalist plaque for having the lowest scoring average on the season. Cranford also received a plaque recognizing his 14th place as an individual at this year’s state tournament.
The Lady Royals’ season was one of the best in girls program history. Coming off last season’s state runners-up finish, the girls looked to take that a step further this year. They worked extremely hard during the off-season and throughout this season in an attempt to make that happen.
This season, the girls team participated in seven 18-hole tournaments, outside of their regular season 9-hole matches. In those bigger tournaments (against much larger schools most of the time), the Lady Royals finished in 2nd place twice, 3rd place three times, and 4th and 7th place once.
On top of that, they won their fourth consecutive Region Championship, qualified for the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year, and won their second consecutive State Runners-up title. Wiegert attested much of the success to the great work ethic, leadership, and ability of seniors Brooke Krieg and McKinley Cranford.

Wiegert commented, “Working with these two young ladies has been a great privilege for me as a coach. I’m so happy for them and the success that they have had these past years. It’s something people won’t forget for quite some time. I hope the young girls in the program now and those coming up next year will use them as inspiration in golf and in their own lives.”
During the awards ceremony, the Lady Royals received their athletic letter certificates and golf flags, as well as, a region championship trophy and a State Runners-up trophy. Lucy Wiegert, McKinley Cranford, and Brooke Krieg received plaques for their individual state tournament placings. Krieg received the girls’ team low medalist plaque.

Concluding the presentation, Wiegert talked about how he hopes for future growth in the program and increased participation in the sport by youth in middle school and even younger. He talked about many students get started early and then stop or they simply pick it up later. Wiegert added, “It is very rare to find students who participate in this sport all throughout both middle and high school. I want to start a group that recognizes that commitment and dedication to our sport.”
He unveiled the prestigious “club” for those golfers who participate in golf for all seven years of middle and high school which will be called the “Legends of the Links”. Wiegert presented Brooke Krieg with her “Legends” plaque in recognition of her time in the BC golf program.
The evening concluded with Wiegert encouraging the golfers to work throughout the off-season to improve their own game and continue the success of the program. He sees a bright future ahead for the both teams.
