For the second straight year, the Board of Education had a good problem with their monthly meeting. That being, enough space for everyone. As those who won state championships in both athletic and extracurricular activities were going to be recognized, the May 23 monthly meeting was held inside the high school auditorium.

The state champion girls tennis team with coaches Greg Collins and Brad Sanders.

Numerous groups and individuals were recognized. The girls state champion tennis team, the boys state champion track team along with individual male and female state winners, and FFA members who won state. Willie Chambers was recognized for being the first state champion in powerlifting. Members of the Royal Singers (Grand Champions at OrlandoFest) and Beta Club Show choir (state champions) were recognized.

Hugh and Juliet Cairney were recognized for winning state in essay at literary this spring. Kaylin Baja from Bleckley 4-H introduced Weston Skipper who won state in archery. FCCLA advisor Sheryl Parks introduced two members who won state and will be going to nationals, Hope Dominy and Gillian Keller-Smith.

Several other things of note took place. The tentative FY20 budget was approved. There was no public comment. A vote on the final budget will take place at the June 11 monthly meeting. There will be another opportunity for public comment. Approved was an agreement with ESE Telehealth to provide telemedicine services for all schools.

The FY20-21 calendar, as chosen by faculty and staff, was approved.

An update was provided on the new primary school. Superintendent Steve Smith said architects were waiting on flood determination from the Department of Natural Resources before applying for site approval. The new primary school is set to be built at the current Bleckley Pre-K and former location of BCHS. On the HVAC projects for the elementary and high schools, work on both is expected to begin July 1.

From the executive session- After approving the resignation of teacher and coach Derrick Farrow last month, the board voted to approve its rescinding. Meeting minutes say Farrow was transferred from teaching at Bleckley Elementary to teaching at both BCMS and BCHS. Ryan Mckenzie was hired as teacher at BCHS. According to a Twitter post, he will also be offensive line coach though the FY20 athletic staffing plan hasn’t been approved
