Students pursuing math and science undergraduate degrees at Middle Georgia State University will have more research opportunities thanks to a grant from the University System of Georgia. MGA’s departments of Natural Science, Mathematics, and Statistics recently received a $50,000 grant through the University System’s STEM IV Initiative.
According to a release, the funds will allow faculty in those departments to expand independent research projects or student apprenticeships and to embed research opportunities in science courses. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. One of the goals of the University System’s STEM Initiatives is to increase the number of students majoring in those subjects.
Members of the STEM Grant team are Dr. Dawn Sherry, chair of MGA’s Department of Natural Sciences, assistant department chair Dr. Donna Balding, as well as Dr. Richard Kilburn and Duane Day from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. They’ve been asked to assist other institutions in developing similar programs.
