The Royals took a step up in competition Friday night, taking on Veterans High School. After getting blown out last year 49-21, BC was within four points at halftime. But the offense stalled, and mistakes would prove costly.

Nisi Haley and Ansley Giddens were recognized as Teachers of the Week for last week's and this week's games. They're pictured with assistant principal Brad Knox, principal Matt Gibbs, and assistant principal Matt Godwin.

BC’s offense was set up early on a fumble recovery at the Warhawk 30. With 7:58 left, Dominic Sasser connected with Marcus Brown on a 29-yard touchdown strike. The Warhawks next drive reached Bleckley’s 24, but ended on a missed 42-yard field goal. They did tie the score on a touchdown run as time expired.

In the second, BC got to the Warhawk 15 but had to settle for a 32-yard Treg Corner field goal as a sure touchdown pass was dropped in the endzone. A 15-yard touchdown run with under three minutes left in the half put Veterans back on top 14-10.

The Royal Kingsmen Future Dazzlers performed during halftime of Friday's game. About 120 girls participated.

It was the third quarter where the game got away. With 2:13 left, a 34-yard touchdown pass increased the lead to 21-10. BC was stopped on their next possession. The ensuing punt wasn’t fielded and bounced forward onto the Royal 25. A reverse on the next play resulted in six points and VHS led 28-10.

The Royals tried to mount a comeback in the fourth. Gong for it on fourth and six from the Warhawk 42, the drive failed following a bad snap, the second one in the same drive. With under seven minutes left, Sasser completed a 48-yard catch and run to Bryce Bailey. The drive stalled at the Warhawk 31 as BCHS lost 28-10.

Bailey finished with 144 all-purpose yards (75 rushing, 69 receiving.) Brown caught seven passes for 72 yards. Defensively, Willie Chambers had 6.5 total tackles, four solo. Ty Williams had six tackles, five solo, two for losses. Arkenzio Hayes had 4.5 tackles, four solo, one tackle for loss.

Shon Jenkins had an interception return in the third quarter.

Bleckley plays at Telfair County September 6. Game time is 7:30 pm.
