Thursday night was a time for learning even more about the new primary school as both architects and the constriction management firm were on hand to provide updates.

Speaking first were Leah Jones and Erin McGahee of Altman + Barrett Architects. McGahee presented a slideshow featuring renderings of what the new school would look like, as well as design and color schemes. Following questions by board members, Lyndy Jones and Jack Lloyd of JCI Contractors gave an update on preliminary pricing.
While Lloyd did give a price of $23.1 million dollars, he noted it very early in the process and early estimates are typically inflated. A GMP (Guaranteed Maximum Price) is expected to be presented at the March meeting. Following more questions, both groups left.

This meeting was the last for Mildred Bloodworth, who will be moving out of state. She was presented with a plaque and token of appreciation for seven years of service. As was reported previously, the board is accepting applications from residents of Bloodworth’s District 2 seat to serve out the remainder of her term.
At last month’s meeting, the board discussed a letter received from the U.S. Department of Education that funding for the 21st Century After School Program would not be available, applications for grants weren’t being accepted. Thursday night, Superintendent Steve Smith presented an email from the Georgia Department of Education saying they were trying to find money to fund programs up for renewal.
Updates are expected in early 2020. In speaking with Smith prior to the executive session, he said the 21st Century Program was too important to students and they would find a way to keep it going.
The most notable news from the executive session was a clarification on the status of Shelly Cranford. While he will be retiring from teaching, Cranford will remain a coach. An agreement was passed naming him District Distance Runners Coach for the remainder of this year and FY21.
