No funding disruption for afterschool program.

Like any district, Bleckley 21st Century’s afterschool program is an important service which benefits students and parents in the community. There’d been concern recently on how the program would be funded as no money was included in the federal budget. Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith had said they would find a way to continue the program, regardless.

Fortunately, some of that worry has been alleviated. At Tuesday night’s monthly Board of Education meeting, Smith said although there was no federal money for afterschool programs in the budget, the state Department of Education had found carryover funding for districts whose five-year funding grants were about to expire (such as Bleckley.)

There would be no need to reapply for a grant, just the matter of the board agreeing to continue to act as fiscal agent for the grant. Which they did. The grant will provide three years of full funding, two years of partial funding.

In other financial matters, final payouts for the HVAC projects at both Bleckley Elementary and BCHS were approved. Details can be found by going to https://simbli.eboardsolutions.com/SB_Meetings/ViewMeeting.aspx?S=4014&MID=83852 under “Facilities Report.”

As he went over the district’s financials, he said with 58.3 percent of the school year completed, 56.9 percent of the budget had been expended. On the new primary school, no unusual issues were found in the Asbestos Report. However, an addendum to the Geotechnical Report noted a soil issue on the grounds where the school will be built.

In order to create the proper base for the foundation, five inches of soil will have to be replaced with five inches of more stable soil. Smith said the issue was similar to one encountered during the gym expansion project.

The first part of Tuesday night’s meeting was devoted to special recognition. A lot. The meeting room was overflowing with visitors for CTAE/CTSO month recognition as well as for members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Team.

CTAE/CTSO Director Dr. Matt Godwin introduced the teachers and sponsors from FBLA, HOSA, FCCLA, and FFA. Each teacher introduced students who spoke about the pathways (courses) offered from their respective organization as well as certifications offered and job opportunities.

From the executive session, the board approved “with regret due to retirement”, the resignation of Janice Bryan effective June 30. Bryan, the Science Chair at BCMS, is a former high school and middle school softball coach as well as middle school basketball coach. She led the Lady Barons to consecutive region titles. In her first year as Lady Royals coach, the team reached the elite eight.
