Communities in Schools Moments in Mentoring March 2020.

It was my pleasure to sit down with Melissa Blankenship and Shouna Markl on a Friday afternoon to talk about life, school, family and mentoring. It was evident that a perfect match was sitting before my very eyes. They are both very responsible and serious people. They find great joy and satisfaction in taking care of things and people in their lives.

Although they have been meeting for a short time this school year, it is clear that two things are true. They both have a love for food and conversation! This combo seems to be working to a tee. Shouna said she looks forward to Fridays when she can get things off her mind and share with Mrs. Blankenship. She said she helps her with questions about high school, life and trusts her completely.

Melissa and Shouna describe themselves as “non-froofroo girls”, however, they did admit to making perfume during one visit. Neither of them were too impressed with the results as they ended up smelling like vanilla. Since that experience, they have decided to stick to puzzles, eating and more talking!

Melissa shared that taking on a mentee can be intimidating and she wondered what they would talk about or what activities they would try. She offered this encouragement to potential mentors, “After a couple of visits, a rhythm begins to form and it ends up being a great experience and fun!” Mrs. Blankenship lives out the CIS/FC Mentoring Program’s main rule, which is to have fun! Thank you, Melissa, for being such a great role model and friend to Shouna!
