COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the economy both nationally and statewide. Last night’s Board of Education called meeting/work session provided a glimpse of its effect locally.
Whole Board Training was conducted first. Led by Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith, an approved trainer through Georgia Leadership Associates,” the board reviewed “Financial Planning and Budget Analysis for Board of Education.” During the presentation, Smith briefly touched on a tentative FY21 budget.
He noted even with certain savings in place, there would still be 2.7 million dollars less in the general fund than before the coronavirus hit. That’s in part due to a 14 percent across the board cut in state funding for agencies officials said would take place. However, even with the cuts, the current budget would still leave a 15 percent reserve in the general fund (FY22 money.)
Several personnel moves were made to fill open positions during the executive session. Following the session, Smith said no new personnel recommendations would be made for FY21 because of budget concerns.
A tentative FY21 budget will be presented at the May 19 meeting. A final budget will be presented at the June 9 meeting. There will be a time allotted for public comment on the budget at both meetings. Each start at 7 pm.
