Future of rec. department to be discussed at city council meeting.

“Discussion of Cochran Bleckley Recreation Department” is the third of three items listed on the agenda for tomorrow night’s called city council meeting. That discussion though could be controversial.

Rec. Board Chair Chan Jones has said there are members of city council who believe the rec. department didn’t have the right to reopen when it voted to do so at the May 4 rec. board meeting. It was at that meeting in which the board voted to open this past weekend and hold baseball and softball opening day games this weekend.

In a phone conversation, Jones indicated the discussion would involve ordering them to close. He said if they were forced to close, it would mean the end of the rec. department. Jones said the cost of refunding registration fees would wipe out their checking account balance of $3,900. He said they had contacted an attorney who sent city council a letter indicating they (the rec. board) had the authority to open.

Mayor Billy Yeomans did not offer insight on what discussion of the rec. department would involve when asked via email. He did disagree with referring to the meeting being closed, noting people could watch or call in via GoToMeeting He also said he would’ve attended the May 4 rec. board meeting had he known it was happening and what would be discussed.

Tomorrow night’s meeting will be held in the city auditorium at 6:30 pm. It will be streamed via GoToMeeting.com The access code is 907-562-269. You can also call to listen to the meeting, 646-749-3122 and use the same access code.
