With school done and no end of year staff meeting, Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting served as a way to recognize both retiring employees as well as Teachers of the Year. In order to hold the extra people while still maintaining social distancing guidelines, the meeting was held in the high school auditorium.

Lori Belflower.

Retiring school employees were recognized first. Those retiring were: Shana Brown, Janice Bryan, Joan Couey, Shelly Cranford, Debra Daniel, Michele Dyal, Susan Knight, Pam Lawson, Dana Rogers. Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith noted the group had a combined 238 years of teaching experience.

Support staff of the year were recognized next. None were in attendance, but their names were shown. Pre K - Pam Evans. Bleckley Primary - Charlene Byrd. Bleckley Elementary- Jenna Maddox. Bleckley County Middle School - Fran McNair. Bleckley County High School - Maggie Smith. Success Academy - Jessica Holland. Bus Driver of the Year: Gina Rodriguez.

Teachers of the Year were then recognized. Unlike past years in which State Bank of Cochran was on hand to present a check, checks had been mailed. Videos from each teacher discussing why they loved teaching were shown. Winners were chosen by their peers. Pre K- Erica Mimbs. BCPS - Lori Belflower. BCES - Dana Goshorn. BCMS - Mindy Henderson. BCHS - Melissa Barker. BCSA - Dana Bell.

Smith then mentioned how District Teacher of the Year would normally be presented at the end of year staff meeting but that wouldn’t be possible due to social distancing guidelines. In a surprise move, Lori Belflower was announced as District Teacher of the Year. Family came forward for photos and congratulations.

It was then time to get to the business of the meeting. A time of public comment was offered for the tentative budget passed at the May 11 called meeting. There was none. Another opportunity for public comment will be available at the June 9 meeting where the final budget will be voted on. That meeting will be held in the BOE meeting room.

In news regarding the new primary school, Smith said the modular units had been installed and Pre-K teachers would begin moving into them once power was turned on. Smith also said bond proceeds that will fund both the new primary school and athletic renovation projects had been received. A majority of the funds had been deposited into Georgia Fund 1.

Smith also provided an update on phase 1 of the construction process. That will involve demolition, asbestos abatement, electrical (demo), and site work. A pre-bid conference was held on May 8. Bids are due on May 20. A called meeting to approve prices for the work will held tomorrow night at 6 pm in the board meeting room.

From the executive session: Michelle Dyal was rehired as Success Academy principal as a 49 percent employee. The athletic supplement list was updated to include incentive additions for FY20 performances. Mike Brannon (BCHS trainer) was added as a boys high school assistant basketball coach. Bobby Farrow and Benny Owens were added as boys assistant community coaches. It should also be noted that while Shelly Cranford did retire as a teacher, the board previously approved his return as a coach for FY21.
