Rec. Board facing financial crisis.

Money was the main discussion at Monday night’s monthly rec. board meeting. Specifically, the lack of it. As board members reviewed the financials, it was learned the checking account has just $400 in it.

The balance being low was attributed to lost revenue from not having concessions and being unable to operate SnoBiz. Not being able to host the Top Gun Sports tournament scheduled for two weeks ago also hurt.

More revenue will be lost as Georgia Dixie Youth Softball announced today that the planned state tournaments had been cancelled. Cochran was set to host the 8u tournament. Instead, the team will advance directly to the world series (currently still scheduled.)

Board chair Chan Jones said they were $20,000 behind their regular income. He said even if the city and county were to provide temporary funding, they still would have to cut programs (IE: basketball in the winter.)

Rec. director Andy Brand said three organizations had contacted him about tournaments in Cochran. Top Gun Sports, Middle Georgia USSSA softball, and a new organization, Out of the Park.

Board members discussed how to get their message to local officials that the only way they could survive financially long term was to host tournaments. Jon Thrower volunteered to speak with city officials to try and express that message. Members agreed with the idea.
