Special recognition and a few policy and personnel matters were among the items discussed at Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting. It was the final one for current chair Kim Wright. She was presented an award for 12 years of service, ten as board chair.

The board poses with their GSBA Exemplary Board award. L-R: Mike Sasser, Amy Williams, Kim Wright, Diane Lester, Shana Evans, and Dr. Steve Smith.

The board was presented an award in recognition of being named a Georgia School Board Association Exemplary Board. The district received the GSBA Leading Edge award for its Employee Education plan. Under the plan, the district will pay for any full-time employee to return to school to receive their teacher certification.

In going over numbers of in-person students and those who had opted for remote learning, Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith noted 78 students in remote learning had opted to return to school in January. It will reduce the percentage of remote learning students from 13 to 9.9 percent. He expressed concern over a high number of remote learning students who might not advance to the next grade for failing to do their required work.

Approved by the board was a bid by Graham Electric at a cost not to exceed $249,000 to install Musco lighting at the high school track. The lighting will also be used for soccer next year. To avoid architect and construction manager fees, the lighting project was kept separate from the larger JCI project.

Speaking of the JCI project, Smith said construction on the new primary school remains ahead of schedule. He added demolition of the old high school gym and visitors bleachers at Royal Stadium should begin soon.

Smith briefly went over updated Title IX regulations as presented in the September issue of the GSBA Policy Update. He recommended the policies remain on the table until the January meeting. The following coordinators were approved per a recommendation from Smith.

Dr. Cindy Felkins was named District Title IX Coordinator. Von Lassiter will continue in his role as Title IX Sports Equity Coordinator. Dr. Trey Belflower was named Title VI, Title VII, and ADEA Coordinator.

From the Executive Session: Assistant Principal Dr. Matt Godwin was named BCHS Assistant Golf Coach.
