Royals focused on hard work in preparing for football season.

It’s been a great few years for Royals football under head coach Von Lassiter. Last year, BC had its third straight ten-win season. This season though would be what some would call a rebuild as 16 starters were lost to graduation. But as Lassiter said in an email interview, they’re focused on players working hard, not rebuilding.

Lassiter said summer practice had been going well. “Our guys have been here and tried to improve daily.” He added they’d been forced inside due to weather which was “concerning.”

There preparations for the season have been different. BC went out of town for summer camps this year as opposed to hosting. Lassiter said they liked to travel when they have young teams because “it seems to grow them closer when they get away together.”

Another change from past years is doing two August scrimmages (at Hawkinsville, at Westside-Macon) as opposed to playing one in the spring. Lassiter said they had so many kids playing spring sports that some weren’t able to come in the spring. The reason for the extra scrimmage was “to see how it works.”

The return of coach and former player Derrick Farrow after leaving for Tift County last year was welcomed by both coaches, players, and fans. Lassiter said “the timing just worked out” in terms of bringing him back. He added they were “beyond excited” to have him back.

Lassiter said they would be young in a lot of areas but they felt good about their young players. He credited the coaching staff for developing them.

On whether the amount of young players would diminish expectations, Lassiter said their focus was on work. “Our coaches have developed a culture of work equals success here. That’s what our guys do. Work. We are proud of the way in which they work.”

When asked if there was anything in particular he’d like to see from this year’s team, Lassiter said he wanted to see evidence of improvement. “I would really like to see evidence of development. I want these guys to step in and be the best they can be and get better every day.”

BCHS has their first scrimmage at Hawkinsville August 4 at 7:30 pm.
