Teens learn about the perils of distracted driving.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. In Georgia, 215 teenagers lost their lives via collisions in 2021. Bleckley County High School has seen it’s share of teen deaths locally due to motor vehicle accidents.

BCHS was one of two schools statewide to have the SNSC (National Safety Council, Southeast Chapter) Distracted Driving Simulator come to their campus. Sponsored locally by Lindsey Dykes State Farm, both the Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office, and Cochran Police Department participated.

The SCNSC’s Distracted Driving Simulator uses virtual reality technology to create manual, cognitive and visual distractions behind-the-wheel. The simulators were designed to show young drivers how speeding and other distractions could have deadly consequences.

Other activities done to help promote safe driving practices included mock traffic stops with law enforcement officers and a golf cart cone course with Fatal Vision googles to simulate alcohol or marijuana impairment.

Students also had the opportunity to sign the “Safe Driver Pledge.” Some did so that morning, several others did so at the Homecoming football game that night.
