The Bleckley County Board of Education met in regular session Tuesday night. There was a quorum with three members present. Absent were Diane Lester and Brandon Keel.
The meeting opened with remarks from Chris Smith. Smith recently resigned his position at the Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office. He thanked the board for getting to serve 15 years as School Resource Officer. Superintendent Dr. Trey Belflower presented Smith with a plaque of appreciation.
The board continued with its discussion of the Strategic Plan and Balanced Scorecards. This month’s discussion centered on Domain 2, Goals 1-3. Belflower provided an update regarding repairs of the flooding damage at the primary school. He said the GSBA was representing them so the repairs could be completed.
Approved was the purchase of a 72-passenger bus. The state will reimburse the district $88,110, and the remaining $43,690 will be paid using ESPLOST funds.
There was discussion over the CSI (Comprehensive School Improvement) status of the Success Academy, the TSI (Targeted School Improvement) status at the primary school. Assistant Superintendent Lara Rowland provided an update on both. According to discussion, the TSI status of the primary school was done due to a clerical error and will be rectified in the next report.
The CSI status is due to the test scores of all students being combined and the BCSA having smaller numbers. Because the CSI status has been ongoing for several years, they have received funding which has been used for things such as software to help students and 49 percent teachers.
From the executive session, Abbey (Sims) Belflower was appointed a community coach for the BCHS Tennis Team. Also of note, next month’s meeting will be held in the high school auditorium so student recognition of state champions can take place.
