Residents of At Home Senior Living got some special visitors
Monday. A team from Portraits of Hope came to assist as At Home had been chosen to be part of a very special upcoming project.
ATSL had been chosen to participate in the “America Shines On the National Mall.” project which celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States. It, along with all events marking the 250th birthday of America are being coordinated by the Freedom 250 organization.
Freedom 250 is the umbrella organization made up of numerous federal and state organizations coordinating the 250th birthday celebration. Mayor Carla Coley found a page on the Freedom 250 website asking for participants in the National Mall project.
She wrote a letter to Portraits of Hope to ask them to come to Cochran. They came Monday afternoon with supplies, instructions, and help. They took questions from the residents and offered options for either seated painting or standing to paint a cube that would have it’s aluminum design rolled up and put onto another buoy lantern for the event.
Residents painted the aluminum sidings that will cover buoys lanterns inside that will be placed in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in October 2026.

The work done by 13 seniors (with some assistance by BCHS students, ATSL staff and Portraits of Hope staff) will be part of 3,000 buoy lanterns that will be on display. To learn more about Portraits of Hope, go to https://www.portraitsofhope.org/
