Competition cheerleading squads use the regular season to fine tune their routine. To figure out what they want to put up in stunts, have for tumbling, even the number of girls cheering. The routine and numbers for BCHS has evolved over the season due to such adjusments as well as injuries.
Saturday was one of the times things had to be right. It was region. Bleckley was part of a marathon day included 4-AA competition, three other classifications, and coed sections at the West Georgia Regionals and Coed Sectionals held at Columbus State. Action began at 1 pm and did not end until after 6.
Bleckley was the third of four 4-AA teams. Despite the drive, a large group of supporters had made the trek to the Lumpkin Center. Sitting on both the upper and lower levels, they made sure to let their voices be heard as the Royals took the mat.
Everything stuck. Stunts were pulled, stunt groups stayed up, the pyramid went off without a hitch. An injury would slightly limit running tumbling, but it was still great. Saturday was one of, if not the best performace of the Royals this season. Everything seemed to come together when it was needed the most.
Nearly five hours later, that would be proven true when announcer Jeff Halsey read the results. Fourth place: Monitcello. Third place Taylor County. Your region runner up, Lamar County. Then Halsey said the words which led to another loud cheer from those supporting Bleckley's purple and gold.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, first place, our Region 4-AA championship goes to.. Bleckley County High School!" The squad celebrated their efforts and championship. It was the 14th time in school history as well as third straight year Bleckley had finished tops in the region.
