News from Tuesday's Board of Education meeting.

At Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, Teachers of the Year for each school were recognized. They are as follows. Bleckley Pre K- Dana Brown. Primary- Karen Grantham. Elementary School- Millie Smith. BCMS- Shana Brown. BCHS- Jenna Harvey. Success Academy- Phillip Hart.

All teachers received a $100 honorarium donated by State Bank of Cochran as well as plaques donated by Alpha Delta Kappa. The system Teacher of the Year will be announced at the end of year convocation in May.

Also recognized was Bill Baldwin. Baldwin chose not to run for re-election after eight years. A former vice chair, he was presented with an award of appreciation by chair Kim Wright.

Two community coaches were approved. Former BCHS boys basketball coach Cliff Kerbo will serve as a community coach for the boys team. Kerbo led the Royals to a 28-4 record and state runner up in 2013. He resigned at the end of the year. Kerbo coached one season at Putnam County before retiring.

Former Royals baseball player Tyler Sellars will be a community coach for the baseball team. According to board minutes, both will be non-compensated positions.

The board approved a new contract for Superintendent Steve Smith that runs through June 30, 2019. The next meeting will be January 17, 2017.
