Middle Georgia State holds second annual Day of Service.


Middle Georgia State University held their second annual Day of Service September 27. Over 300 volunteers made up of students, faculty, and staff did service projects in the five MGA campus communities. In Cochran- Student volunteers played dominos with residents of At Home Senior Living, installed wind screens on all fields at the Cochran Bleckley Rec. Department, helped Promise of Hope with property cleanup and painting, assist Georgia Canine Rescue and Rehab with cleaning of the facility as well as caring for and walking the animals, made a new gate entrance at the Middle Georgia Equestrian Center, cleared limbs and trimmed trees, plus made a stall for one of the horses.

MGA students were also at Bleckley Elementary, reading to children as well as participating in the annual “Shoot Hoops, Not Drugs” event. On campus, one group of students washed buses, another planted a butterfly garden at the corner of Second and Ann Street.

Called Board of Education meeting tomorrow.

There will be a called meeting of the Bleckley County Board of Education tomorrow at 6 pm inside the board meeting room, 242 N. Dykes St. According to a Tweet posted by the district, the purpose of the meeting is to act on some personnel matters and any other business that comes before the board.

New art exhibition opening in MGA's Peacock Gallery October 7.

The April Wright Art Exhibition "Material Traces" will open October 7 inside Peacock Gallery located on the first floor of Russell Hall on the Cochran campus of Middle Georgia State University October 7. An opening reception and gallery talk will be held that night at 6 pm. The exhibition will be on display through November 8. Peacock Gallery hours are 8 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday, 8 am-noon on Fridays.

Students cap off a good Homecoming week.


It was a good Homecoming week at Bleckley County High School. Students enjoyed the different themed days, a new Queen and King were crowned, and the Royals won Friday's football game versus Northeast. Saturday night, students capped the week by enjoying the Homecoming dance. The dance, a tradition for years, returned last year after a long absence.

Though Saturday's performance at the Middle Georgia Cheer Classic, there was improvement. While winning first was good, the squad's bigger focus is to be ready for region and state.
