Royals outlast weather to defeat Hornets.

After being on the road for the pre-season and their regular season opener, BCHS opened the home season Friday night against Cook County.  It proved to be a long but successful one for the Royals.

Zyion Love capped a 60-yard opening drive with a five-yard touchdown run.  The point after was missed.  Cook answered with a 33-yard touchdown with 1:53 left in the first.  The point after was also missed.

Soon after, players were called off the field due to lightning in the area.  They’d wait out a delay which included an overall brief but heavy rain.  According to the summary on MaxPreps, play resumed at 9:16.  The only other score of the half was a Brody Fleming to Jason McNulty three-yard touchdown pass with 40 seconds left.

BC led 13-6 at halftime.  As the third quarter began, it was announced time would be kept on the field due to issues with the scoreboard .  Love scored his second touchdown of the game, a 45-yard dash to the endzone.  With 1:05 left, McNulty had his second TD reception from Fleming, a 13-yard catch.  The Royals led 27-6 going to the fourth.

It was there were Cook tried to make the game interesting.  A seven-yard touchdown run made it 27-12.  BC fumbled the ensuing kickoff, it was recovered by the Hornets at the BC 29.  A 28-yard touchdown pass and successful PAT had Cook within 27-19.

After being stopped on fourth down , the Royal defense would help seal the game.  Marty Beck intercepted a Cook pass on the Hornet 42.  The drive was capped by Kix Foskey’s one-yard touchdown run with 2:26 left.  BC prevailed 34-19.

It will be a matchup of former region foes September 4 when Bleckley hosts Jasper County.  Kickoff is at 7:30 pm.
