No acting, it was fun first night of UNO.
Acting Knights Theatre- Middle Georgia State University held an UNO tournament Tuesday night at the Chamber Commons. Event organizers said it was a fundraiser for the group and they hoped to gain funds to be able to do a Shadowcast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. A shadowcast is where the movie is showing while actors on stage act out the movie. They also had a goal of brinnging something good to the community and bringing something downtown. All 159 Georgia counties will be reading the Bible on July 14 at 7:14 AM.

City council meeting updates.
There will be a meeting to discuss the city's FY27 budget July 6 at 6 pm in the city auditorium. This month's council work session was moved to July 9 at 6 pm (I'd guess because of July 2 being close to the July 4 holiday.)
An afternoon of juggling fun at the library.
The summer reading program continued at the Tessie W. Norris Library Wednesday afternoon with a program entitled "Juggle like an Egyptian." It was done by Ron Anglin. Anglin, owner of the company What a catch juggling has a had a varied career life. He was in the US Army and also taught high school for nine years. City, county government offices to be closed Friday for July 4.
Both Cochran City Hall and the Bleckley County Courthouse have announced via Facebook they would be closed Friday July 3 in observance of July 4.
BCFD purchases infrared cameras.
(Photos contributed.) The Bleckley County Fire Department purchased 15 infrared cameras thanks to the proceeds from their Boston Butt sale in November. The cameras will be placed in each engine and will also be given to some officers. The cameras will help in cases where a fire at a fire scene or a hot spot is invisible to the naked eye.
Downed trees at local church due to storm damage.
During last night's thunderstorms, two trees were knocked down at Bethany Baptist Church. According to an email from a reader, one hit two cars in the parking lot, the other fell on to the pastorium. The church did announce via Facebook that Vacation Bible School would continue tonight. The post asked cars to park in the lot on the side of the church next to Country Club Road near the middle school.

Former Royals basketball coach Kerbo passes away.
Former BCHS boys basketball coach Clifford Kerbo has passed away. The announcement came Sunday via the Dublin City Schools Facebook page where he almost coached. Kerbo coached eight seasons for Bleckley. He lead the Royals to a 28-4 record and a state runner-up finish in 2013 and won AA Coach of the Year.
10u baseball team wins state title.
A contributed photo of the 10u team. The 10u All Stars Baseball Team won the Dixie Youth State Title Saturday in Waynesboro, defeating Schley County 10-1. It's the third straight state title for this group of players. They advance to the World Series in Laurel, Mississippi July 22-27.
Busy day of fundraising for Royal Kingsmen.
The Royal Kingsmen Band held a car wash and bake sale Saturday in the Citizens Bank of Cochran parking lot. While band members cleaned vehicles and stood on street corners to advertise and collect donations, parents tended to the bake sale which featured a wide variety of sweet treats. Sunset Slush was there for anyone needing a way to cool off from the summer sun. The band will hold a preview of this year's halftime show July 31 at 7 pm in Royal Stadium.

10u baseball team stays hot at state.
The Bleckley 10u All Star Baseball team won two games at state Friday beating Marion County 12-0 and Schley County 11-5. BC is the only undefeated team remaning.

The BCHS baseball team held a kids camp this week. Players learned about things such as hitting and fielding from players and coaches. The final thing for Thursday was wet fun as a makeshift slip 'n slide was made in the outfield to allow the campers to some practice in sliding

BCES Beta Club members place at Natonals.

Two Betas came home with awards. Lille Kay Darey finished second in Creative Writing. Rayland Bell finished fifth in Health and PE. Congratulations to them and to all the Beta Club members who made it to nationals.
BCHS Competition and Football Cheerleaders selling pizza kits, car wash vouchers.
The BCHS Competition and Football Squad Cheerleaders are selling Little Caesars Pizza Kits, bread kits, cookie dough, and pizza utensils. The last day to order is July 20. The cheerleaders are also selling Tidal Wave Car Wash vouchers. Cost is $0 for a $20 wash valid at any location. They'll be on sale through September 4. Board of Education passes final budget, changes graduation date, at monthly meeting.
At last Thursday's monthly meeting, the Board of Education approved the FY27 budget, moved graduation off the same weekend as Memorial Day among other actions taken. Click for more.
Bleckley All Star Teams seeking sponsors for upcoming trip to world series.
Both the 6u coach pitch baseball team and the 10u softball team are state champions. Both will be attending the world series in Laurel, Mississippi in July. Both teams are seeking community sponsors to help pay for the trip. See each team's sponsorship form for more information.
Pilot Club presents brain safety program to Head Start.

BCMS hosted a basketball tournament Saturday It provided an opportunity for the upcoming teams to get some work. Besides the Barons and Lady Barons, Dodge County, Telfair County, and Wilkinson County middle schools participated.

Celebration fest of a special day held.
A Juneteenth celebration was held Saturday morning behind the chamber of commerce and police station. There were a variety of community groups involved, and a variety of activities available. A bounce house for kids, face painting, food trucks, shopping, as well as an educational booth about what Juneteenth meant. Following the festival, a gospel concert was held in the city auditorium.

In Sandersville- the 8u baseball team beat Hephzibah 14-4 yesterday and beat Crawford County 22-12 today. They play Irwin County tomorrow at 10:30 am. Both the 8u and 10u softball teams are in Waynesboro. The 8u team beat Crawford County 14-2 but lost to host Burke County 10-6. They'll face Schley County in an elimination game tomorrow at 10 am. Royals baseball players make Georgia Dugout Club All State Team.
Six BCHS baseball players were selected to the Georgia Dugout Club All State team for Class A Division 1. First team- Walker Boatright (Utility) and Noah Woodard (Infielder.) Second team- Gavin Cole (Utility) and Jay Johnson (DH.) Third team- JD Holloway (Pitcher) and Brody Fleming (Infielder.)
KOHR 8u wins Perfect Game World Series.
(A contributed photo of the team.) The local based KOHR 8u baseball team won the Perfect Game World Series played this pas weekend in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The team got off to a slow start in pool play but won six straight games to claim the title, beating a team from Louisiana for the championship. KOHR's overall record stands at 114-12-2.
City, county government offices to be closed for Juneteenth.
Both Cochran City Hall and the Bleckley County Courthouse will be close June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.
Downtown Development Authority announces date of rescheduled meeting.
The Downtown Development Authority announced its monthly board meeting postponed June 16 has been rescheduled for June 22 at 5:30 pm. All meetings take place in the conference room at the municipal building at 102 North Second Street.

Downtown Scavenger Hunt postponed.
The Cochran-Bleckley Chamber of Commerce announced via Facebook that the Super Downtown Scavenger Hunt scheduled for tomorrow night has been postponed until July 16 due to the likelihood of bad weather.
BCFD Firefighter certified as child safety seat inspector.
Wendy Cook, a firefighter and instructor for the Bleckley County Fire Department, was recently certified as a child safety seat inspector. If you are installing a seat or aren't sure yours is properly installed, you can call her at (478)230-3344.

Tomorrow's Downtown Development Authority board meeting has been postponed. In am email announcing the postponement, the reason given was "unforeseen circumstances."
Cochran 10u baseball team wins tournament.

They took two games from Wens, 20-2 and 13-0. Bleckley defeated host Washington County 6-3 for the championship. The team travels to Waynesboro next weekend for state.
Music you could dance to on Saturday night.
Second Saturday Music and Food Trucks was held Saturday night on the courthouse square. This month's band was Tres Hombres who entertained the crowd with classic rock and country. The music was so good that it led a few people to get up and dance. The next Second Saturday will be July 11 featuring the Midlife Chryslers.
Lady Royals hold softball camp.
The BCHS softball team held a kids camp this past Wednesday through Friday. Children received instruction from Lady Royal coaches and players on things such as hitting, defense, and base running. After camp finished Friday, they enjoyed a free slush from Sunset Slush of Cochran. The Lady Royals would like to thank the parents who trusted them with their children over the past three days,
Local artist visits library.

Baseball team getting in early work for next season.
Though the 2027 baseball season is still some time away, BCHS has been getting an early start with summer practices and a few summer scrimmage games. They've played a few five-inning doubleheaders in order to give both the upcoming freshmen as well as returning players a chance to play. Thursday was likely their last scrimmage of the summer against Dodge County. The team will be hosting a kids baseball camp, June 22, 23, and 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for kids ages 5 to 12. The last night of a VBS Tropical Trek.
\ It was Parents Night for Vacation Bible School at Lakeview Baptist Church Wednesday evening. This week's theme has been Tropical Trek. VBS Director Michelle Knighton welcomed everyone and got children to repeat the week's theme, Jesus seeks and He saves. Kids then performed the songs learned during the week. A magical afternoon at the library.

Local Automotive Technology major gets hands-on experience at OFTC.
(Photos courtesy news release.) Angela Martin is an Automotive Technology major from Cochran attending Oconee Fall Line Technical College. She, along with classmates, have been getting hands on experience by getting to work with vehicle parts as part of their training. Students are learning to diagnose systems, perform repairs, and apply industry-standard procedures using modern automotive equipment.

A “Tre-mendous” time at VBS.
The second night of Vacation Bible School took place at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Monday evening. This year's theme is "Rainforest Falls: Discovering the Nature of God." Activities included music, "Sticky Scripture", Bible stories and games in the church's newly built gym. VBS will last through June 11, 5:30-8:30 pm each night. Family day will be June 14.
Local students graduate from OFTC.
Three Bleckley County residents were among the 143 students to participate in graduation ceremonies held at Oconee Fall Line Technical College June 5 on the Dublin campus. Graduates received degrees, diplomas and technical certificates of credit in categories including Early Childhood Care and Education, Commercial Truck Diving (CTD), Nursing, and Machine Tool. Those graduating from Bleckley were: Brittney Alvarez, Leala Mae Hutchens, and Gillian Keller-Smith.
Royals Football player commits to Georgia Tech.
(Photo courtesy @ZLassiter24 on X) Von and Zayden Lassiter. Zayden Lassiter announced Saturday via social media he had committed to Georgia Tech. Lassiter, the son of head coach Von Lassiter, is an upcoming senior for BCHS. A longs napper and tight end for the Royals, Lassiter committed to Georgia Tech for his special teams skills. Lassiter received high marks at Rubio Long Snapping events held by Chris Rubio including winning the top overall championship at Rubio 48 held recently in Las Vegas. He received several offers, from D1 schools including all three service academies.
Fifth annual Gun Violence Awareness Festival held.

During the day, there were things like food booths and activities for kids. That evening, a special service was held by the church. It featured messages and songs from family members, foundation members, and remarks by Mayor Carla Coley. Rozier Auto Parts Car Show held.

The 10u All Star baseball team had a good start to Dixie Youth District tourney play by beating Marion County 15-0 and Schley County 7-1 Friday night. They'll play for the championship tomorrow at 1 pm in Cochran.
An illuminating time at VBS Parents Night.
First Baptist Church held parents night for Vacation Bible School Thursday evening. This year’s theme has been “Illumination Station.” Family and Children’s Pastor Ryan McWhorter spoke about the week, recognized volunteers and also talked about the mission project for the week. Called “Helping Schools Help Kids,” funds raised would be used so that the church could provide things needed by the schools. After the program, children enjoyed a scavenger hunt then pizza and coloring.

Facebook isn’t playing nice.
An updated as to why it seems like there are no updates on Facebook or very scattered. I'm apparently running afoul of some security algorithm. The page growth has been awesome, 133 followers in less than a week. But Facebook keeps noticing a "new" login (ISP IP address stupidity) and the fast growth, sharing from other places. So they've soft throttled me. I can still login but attempts to post anything of my own gets me a scolding about "preventing spam" even when I went 8 hours between posting. Making a fun mess at VBS.
Monday was the second night of Vacation Bible School at Christ Chapel Cochran. This year’s theme has been “What a Mess.” Activities that night included Bible stories, learning songs, fun outside, and making a special kind of sand in arts and crafts. Parent Night will be June 10 at 8 pm.
Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser will benefit church family facing unplanned medical expense.
Faith Baptist Church will hold a spaghetti plate fundraiser from 11 am to 2 pm. Cost is $15 and includes spaghetti, corn on the cob, garlic bread, desert and drink. Dine in or carry out. Proceeds will benefit one of their families facing unexpected medical expenses.

Summer Reading Kickoff Party held

There were activities for kids and families, free popcorn, and a chance to sign up for the Summer Reading Program. The library will host a "Ducks" story time this Friday at 2 pm.

Going on a Kingdom Quest to start VBS.
Vacation Bible School season kicked off Tuesday night at Limestone Baptist Church. This year’s theme is :”Kingdom Quest.” Kids rotated in stations which included music, arts and crafts, a Bible story, and recreation outside. The art project night was to draw fishing nets in relation to the night’s main scripture Matthew 4:19 which said “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” VBS runs from 5:30-8 pm through May 28. Parents night will be May 29 at 6 pm.
Local church opening food bank May 29.
Faith Temple Precious Faith Ministries will open their food bank May 29 from 3 to 3:30 pm. According to a Facebook post announcing the food bank, there will also be an agency present to provide assistance and support for individuals and families who receive SNAP benefits. Faith Temple is located at 383 GA. 87.
Delay to start of Summer Feeding Program.
Bleckley County School District announced via Facebook Tuesday morning that delivery for the Summer Feeding Program had been delayed and apologized for the inconvenience. According to the post, things will begin next Tuesday at 9:30 am at the Board of Education office.

Middle GA Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry in Cochran May 28.
The Middle Georgia Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry will be at the Cochran Bleckley Rec. Department May 29 from 11 am until 2 pm or until supplies run out. It is a drive thru event, please stay in your car upon arrival.
A time to honor those who gave all.
A Memorial Day program was held Monday morning on the courthouse square. It featured the presentation of colors by Patrick Mimbs of American Legion Post 107, the singing of the national anthem by Anna Grace Dyes from the BCHS Class 0f 2026, and an invocation delivered by county commissioner Mike Davis. Air Force Lt. Col Michael Jones (ret.) was the master of ceremonies and guest speaker. He spoke on the current conflict with Iran. After the program, guests enjoyed refreshments by the Cochran Woman's Club.

Longtime Team Chaplain, Pastor, recognzied.

Local students earn awards from Oconee Fall Line Technical College.
Five Bleckley seniors earned their Technical Certificate of Credit or Diploma through Oconee Fall Line Technical College’s Dual Enrollment Program. Georgia’s Dual Enrollment Program allows qualified high school students to maximize their education and career training by taking courses that earn college and high school credit at the same time. Students receiving awards from OFTC were: Adam Burke, Auto Electrical/Electronics Systems, Auto Climate Control Technician, Auto Chassis Technician Specialist, Auto Engine Repair Technician. Girls weightlifting team finishes region runner up.
(Photo contributed.) BCMS Girls Weightlifting finished second at the region meet held today, losing to West Laurens by six points. First place finishers were Caroline Eckles, Lily Smith, Augusta Finch, Lae'la Harris, and Brinlee Davis. Lily Smith received the overall strongest competitor award. The boys compete at West Laurens tomorrow.
