It was a busy monthly meeting of the Cochran Bleckley Rec. Department board Monday night. A new chair presided over the meeting, Carmen Pierce. Chan Jones stepped down from the chair position last month but is remaining on the board,

Pierce brought up an issue presented to her by Mayor Billy Yeomans, It was a list of people who kept scores during last year’s church league softball tournament hosted by the rec. department. The scorekeepers had been promised money for keeping score, they were members of different churches participating.

The main questions board members had were who had promised payment and why were they liable for paying when they made no money off the tournament. Board member Rich Hulsey volunteered to contact the softball committee to find out where the promise of money came from.

Director Andy Brand mentioned that they hosted Dixie Darlings 8u state playoffs Saturday between Cochran and Crawford counties. The decision to play wasn’t made until last Friday. Cochran was victorious in two games, winning the state title. Brand said he’d like to have the team and coaches at next month’s meeting to be recognized The team will not be playing in the world series.

There was discussion regarding registration for fall football and soccer, both ongoing. Brand said while usually people wait until the last week to register, numbers were already above double digits in both. Jones suggested adopting a policy regarding refunds. Board member Jon Thrower pointed out that there was a written policy that refunds wouldn’t be offered once uniforms were ordered and not being on the preferred team wasn’t grounds for a refund.

Jones also suggested putting the registration money into a separate fund should they be forced to cancel the seasons due to COVID-19. Brand agreed with the idea.

There was discussion over projects that would be paid for by SPLOST funds. They included improvements to the football field, including goalposts, a new scoreboard for the field, as well as new soccer nets. Jones cautioned against spending all the funds should there be a shortfall due to COVID-19.

It was mentioned during the meeting that they were down a city member as Sheika Elvine had resigned due to schedule conflicts. Board members expressed desire to have an African American fill the spot. At the beginning of the meeting, Jamie Davis was introduced as a new member.

The meeting ended with discussion of possible ideas to bring in revenue. Several were discussed with the possibility of holding them in October when the weather’s cooler.
