The GHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Council held its weekly meeting Wednesday. It was highly watched following recent comments by Georgia Public Health Director Katherine Toomey who had expressed concern about COVID-19 transmission risks from football, competition cheerleading, chorus, and band.
Today, a statement from GHSA Executive Director Robin Hines announced the following. All football scrimmages have been eliminated. The statement says practices should continue to follow previous guidelines so athletes and staff will remain in a controlled environment and the first game will still be September 4. The moves were made due to "high risk and physical contact."
Competition cheerleading season was pushed back to a tentative start date of November 21. The statement said packed arenas which don't allow for social distancing was the cause. It also said dates would be published when venues are secured to accommodate the needs of cheerleading.
One Act Play was tentatively moved to spring due to "risk of indoor venues and aerosol spray from projection and singers." It further stated details would be provided when Associate Director Tommy Whittle returns from vacation.
