Bleckley County High School Junior golfer Lucy Wiegert was in Murfreesboro, Tennessee for the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s “Old Fort Junior Open” August 29 and 30. Round one for the girls’ 15-18 division was scheduled for afternoon tee times which meant playing in fairly high heat and humidity.

Wiegert struggled somewhat throughout this round finding it difficult to hit the fairway or judge the right speed of the greens. She ended day one with a score of 85 and in second place, 4 strokes behind the leader.

Round two came with a late morning tee time and began with a little overcast and cooler temps. Wiegert saw some trouble right off the bat on the first hole and by the end of the third hole found herself at +3 for the round and eight strokes back from the leader. Her round got a big boost on the fourth hole, however, with a chip in birdie and she hit the accelerator for the rest of her round.

With this boost of confidence, Wiegert found almost every fairway off the tee for the rest of the round; she hit almost every green. Her putting stroke was smooth and confident. Wiegert went on to add another chip-in birdie on hole 9, make a long birdie putt on hole 15 and overall secure 10 pars down the stretch to only 2 bogeys.

She finished the round with a personal best single round score of 74 (two over par) and two-day score of 159 (15 over par) making her the girls’ 15-18 division champion by two strokes. Her next competition will be the Georgia PGA Junior tour event at Georgia Southern University on September 26-27.
