BCHS opened the regular season Saturday afternoon against Rutland in Fort Valley as part of the first annual Gridiron Classic. In what was a tough game for all due to high humidity, the Royals had little trouble shutting out the Hurricanes.

DQ Benjamin

Already leading thanks to a Ford Childers field goal on their first drive, Josh Stanley’s 23-yard touchdown run with 5:04 left made it 10-0. On the ensuing possession, Rutland would drive to the BC 42 but be stopped on fourth down.

A one-yard DQ Benjamin touchdown run early in the second added to the lead. The defense got another stop on the Hurricanes next possession, stopping them at the Royal nine.

Tyrek Mack with a sack.

BC got a second one-yard Stanley touchdown run with less than minute in the first half and took a 24-0 lead into the dressing room. Rutland returned the opening second half kickoff to midfield.

But the Royal defense again held. The ensuing punt was blocked by Nykez Farrow who returned it 13 yards for a touchdown. Later in the quarter, BC drove to the Rutland 44 but fumbled.

Amarian Burns.

The only offensive play of note in the fourth was a missed 37-yard field goal. Bleckley won 31-0. Head coach Von Lassiter announced later that afternoon via social media Tyrek Mack had been offered a scholarship to play at Fort Valley State after Wildcat coaches watched him during pregame warmups.

Benjamin rushed for 101 yards on 12 carries. BCHS opens region play at home August 23 against Dodge County at 7:30 pm.
